Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of increasing the contents of total solids (TS) in whole milk, by adding increasing amounts of milk replacer powder, on the behavior of dairy heifers. Holstein-Gyr crossbred heifers (n = 60) were distributed in four treatments: 13.5, 16.1, 18.2, and 20.4% TS. From 5 to 55 days of age, heifers received 6 L per day of liquid feed, which was reduced by half from 56 to 59 days. Heifers were weaned at 60 days of age and monitored until 90 days, and their behavior was evaluated weekly. During gradual weaning and after weaning, heifer behavior was recorded 1 hour before and 1 hour after liquid feed was offered, and, during weaning, it was evaluated by the scan method. Heifers fed liquid feed...

Environmental and genetic effects on the lactation curves of four genetic groups of crossbred Holstein-Zebu cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Glória,Joana Ribeiro da; Bergmann,José Aurélio Garcia; Quirino,Célia Raquel; Ruas,José Reinaldo Mendes; Pereira,Jonas Carlos Campos; Reis,Ronaldo Braga; Coelho,Sandra Gesteira; Silva,Martinho de Almeida e.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of genetic group and environmental factors, including farm of origin, season of calving and lactation number, on the individual lactation curves of 1,010 Holstein-Gyr, Guzerat-Holstein, Holstein-Nellore, and Holstein-Zebu F1 cows on the experimental farms of the Agricultural Research Company in Minas Gerais (Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais, EPAMIG). Least squares analysis and the incomplete gamma function were used to investigate differences in early milk yield, peak milk yield, time from onset to the lactation peak, persistency, total milk yield and lactation duration. The highest early yields were observed for Holstein-Gyr and Holstein-Zebu, and the lowest were observed for...

Metabolic and hormone profiles of Holstein x Gyr cows during pre- and postpartum PAB
Franzoni,Ana Paula Saldanha; Gloria,Joana Ribeiro da; Costa,Anna Luiza Belli de Souza Alves; Martins,Ronaldo Alves; Amaral,Thiago Fernandes; Azevedo,Rafael Alves de; Campos,Ernane Ferreira; Coelho,Sandra Gesteira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to describe the effect of genetic composition on body condition score (BCS), on total lactation production, and on metabolic and hormone profiles of Holstein x Gyr cows under the same pre- and postpartum management conditions. The genetic groups ½ (n=8), – (n=10), and ≥⅞ (n=10) Holstein x Gyr (HG) were evaluated within the same farm, and all of them showed typical lactation curves. The time required to reach peak production did not differ between groups. The groups also did not differ as to time to reach the lowest BCS after calving or to recover BCS after calving, nor as to their BCS values in the week of first ovulation, number of weeks required for first ovulation, and service period. However, ½ HG cows had...

Performance of lactating dairy cows fed sunflower or corn silages and concentrate based on citrus pulp or ground corn R. Bras. Zootec.
Leite,Leonardo Andrade; Reis,Ronaldo Braga; Pimentel,Patrícia Guimarães; Saturnino,Helton Mattana; Coelho,Sandra Gesteira; Moreira,Guilherme Rocha.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diets containing sunflower or corn silages and concentrate based on citrus pulp or ground corn on intake, apparent digestibility, feeding behavior, microbial protein production, and production, composition, and fatty acid profile of milk from dairy cows. Eight multiparous lactating Holstein cows (586±61 kg live weight; 25.0±4.0 kg daily milk yield at 80 to 120 days in milk) were randomly assigned to a double 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial array. The experimental diets were: sunflower silage + citrus pulp-based concentrate; sunflower silage + ground corn-based concentrate; corn silage + citrus pulp-based concentrate; and corn silage + ground corn-based concentrate. The dry matter intake...

Reduction of crude protein in diets fed to lactating Holstein-Gyr cows PAB
Guimarães,Clóvis Ribeiro; Azevedo,Rafael Alves de; Campos,Mariana Magalhães; Machado,Fernanda Samarini; Pedroso,Alexandre Mendonça; Carvalheira,Luciano de Rezende; Tomich,Thierry Ribeiro; Pereira,Luiz Gustavo Ribeiro; Coelho,Sandra Gesteira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of reducing crude protein (CP) contents in diets with a constant metabolizable protein content on the intake, performance, nitrogen balance, and nutrient digestibility of lactating Holstein-Gyr cows. Animals (n = 24, 103±23 days in milk) were allocated to four treatments (n = 6 per group) with different CP contents: 127, 132, 139, and 156 g kg-1 dry matter (DM). DM intake was not affected by treatments. CP intake and digestibility increased linearly with higher CP contents. Milk yield (23.7±3 kg per day) and the percentages of milk protein (3.3±0.2%) and fat (3.8±0.5%) were not affected by CP reduction. Milk and blood urea nitrogen increased linearly with the increase of CP in the diet,...
